Harry, a warehouseman aged 19, enlisted to the Manchester Regiment on the 19th Febraury 1915. At this time he was living at 31 Bowker St, Broughton. On the 28th of August 1915 he married Gladys Underwood at St John's Church (in duplicate documents the details of this marriage have been struck through and all further correspondnce is sent to Harry's father). Promoted to lance corporal (unpaid) 8/07/1916. Reported missing 01/08/1916. He was officially presumed as killed in action on the 24/05/1917, his identity disc was the only personal possession returned to his family. The 1911 census shows Harry, a 14 year old school boy, living at 31 Bowker St, Broughton, with his parents, Joseph and Esther Johnson, and sisters, Mabel and Elsie. He is also remembered on his mother's headstone at St Paul's, Kersal Moor.
