A A Bethel Grenadier Guards Volunteered in September 1914 and 6 months later was drafted to France where he played a prominent part in the Battles of Neuve Chapelle,Hill 60, Ypres(11) Loos, Albert ,Vimy Ridge, Ploegsteert Wood and The Somme. He was badly wounded in action on 15th September 1916, he died in hospital at Camiers 10 days later and was buried at Etaples.He was entitled to 1914-15 star ,general service and victory medals

Age 34 suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was sent to the UK, becoming a apatient in Devonport Hospital. By the end of July he was in a Liverpool Hospital . He lived with his wife and child in Bentleys Buildings Weaste . He was a South Africa war veteran and had a framed certificate from Colonel Sir Lee Knowles , Colonel Howarth and officers of the then 3rd volunteer battalion " tp place on record their deep sense of appreciation of the loyal and patriotic spirit which prompted you to serve the cause of your country in South Africa and thus aspire to deserve the honour and prestige of the British nation.It is indeed with feelings of sincere pleasure that we welcome you upon your safe return after having engaged in active service for the first time in the annals of the volunteer force

Age 18 he was born in Salford the only son of Harry and Ak Lazenby of 14 Trevelyan St Eccles. He worked at Monton Mill and was a member of the Barton Hall Orchestra. Harry senior had served in the Gordon Highlanders and was wounded at the storming of Dargai Heights during the Africa war. He was in the second Egyptian campaign under Kitchener , went on to serve in the South Africa war and was present at the relief of Ladysmith and Mafeking before being wounded and captured. He was mentioned in dispatches and had the Queens South Africa Medal with five clasps and Kings South Africa Medal with two clasps. When war broke out in 1914 this distinguished old soldier was working at Winterbottoms works at Monton.He enlisted and was promoted immediately to the rank of Sergeant Major, he served with the 17th Lancashire Fusiliers in Yorkshire.Mr and Mrs Lazenby later moved to Wellfield House Rochdale

At 7:30pm on 28th March 1916 the Battalion marched to the trenches at Authuille. Private Harry Worthington was killed by a rifle grenade and buried in a grave just below the hill where he fell. The Army Chaplain wrote " The little servive at the graveside was attended by his friends and a cross, made by his comrades has been placed on the grave.
A single man aged 36 he was the son of Henry and Sarah Ann Worthington of 11 King St Eccles , and he ran a toffee stall at Eccles Cross with his brother and sister in law. The Chaplain also wrote about his musical talents. " He was a great help to the various concerts , for he was a good pianist , and used to enjoy accompanying the songs.

Yes, Garry, Ancestry have the National Probate Calendars (though you can also access them the old fashioned way on film/fiche at many libraries and records offices). The Ancestry search is much quicker as you don't have to know the year to look for.
