The church dates back over 800 years.

Some gravestones were saved, among them that of Robert Stephenson, son of the 19th century railway pioneer George Stephenson. George was Chief Engineer for the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, which opened in 1830, passing through Eccles. It was the first regular commercial passenger railway in the world and ushered in the Railway Age and the industrial development of Manchester. But the famous Stephenson’s Rocket locomotive was actually built by Robert Stephenson. His gravestone can be seen outside the church, behind the East window.

There is a third stained glass window, in the north aisle towards its east end. It is a memorial to the fourteen members of the 292 (Eccles) and the 1099 (Walkden) Air Training Corps Squadrons who were killed in the Second World War whilst serving in the Fleet Air Arm or the Royal Air Force. By any standards, fourteen must be considered a large proportion of the cadets in those two units and the memorial gives rise to just as much sorrow as does the other war memorial in the south porch.

The mediaeval South Porch, which had already been rebuilt once in 1790, was rebuilt once again in 1921 and dedicated as a memorial to the Eccles men who were killed in the 1914-18 War. Their names are inscribed on the inside walls of the porch and number well over 100. Most of them died together within the same ten minutes on July 1st, 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme, when 180 or so Eccles "Pals" from the 16th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers climbed out of their trenches to assault the chateau at Thiepval. Most were cut down within yards and, at the end of the day, only 18 of them remained unharmed; the rest lay killed or wounded between the lines.

This statement found on the church's website may not be true. Whilst the majority were killed whilst serving in the Fleet Air Arm or the Royal Air Force, it does not seem true for all.
