Holy Rood WW1 J Royle Jesse born Swinton resident Worsley private Lancashire Fusiliers 1/7th battalion 2043 died 27/7/1915 CWG B.7.Port Said War Memorial Cemetery Private Jesse Royle died of wounds in Egypt , aged 18 . He was born in Swinton , and lived at 10 Cross St Hazelhurst Worsley and worked at the Bridge water Colliery. His mother received his last letter home in mid July. 'I am in the best of spirits at the present. Jack( Private John Price of Hazelhurst Fold) was wounded in the leg abouth three weeks ago, and along with another youth, I helped to get him from the firing line down to base. I have heard since that he is in the Citadel Hospital at Cairo. We have been here about nine weeks now , and during that time I have had one pair of socks, one clean shirt, and washed myself about six times, so you will see we are in the thick of it.But we are happy , so what does it matter?. Fred Ellison(of the 1/8th battalion) got killed in the first few weeks we were here, and Herbert Worrall was killed in the same trench that I was in. He washed my shirt the night before he was killed, and he is sadly missed by us all.(From Hell let Loose 1/7th Battalion) Wendy Good evening, I may be related to the above mentioned (Jesse Royle), can you share any more information regarding him? Thanks in advance, Jennifer Hilton
