Stephen Begley, born 17 May 1892, last address 196 Ordsall Lane, maybe 138 Oldfield Road.
1st Manchester Regiment, Pte 1577 Date of death 20 Dec 1914 Le Touret Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Unknown grave.
Im curious about these numbers on his medal card:
14/1/104 B13 2858 H/1/1 5 Already found it, saw the medal card of one of his older brothers.
Clasp/2/2649
Did his name ever appear on a Salford Memorial?
The details on CWGC shows his parents'address as 34 Tatton Street. In 1920 his widowed mother still lived at Oldfield Rd with three other sons, in 1822 Tatton Street (Electoral Rools). Could this mean he had been missing all that time, presumed dead?

We have not as yet come across a memorial or roll of honour bearing his name, though I do have him in the SWARM database.

Loes, As Jim states we have not found Stephen's name on any of the memorials yet. Taking Tatton St as his main address I would have thought that he would be remembered on either the Regent Square memorial, the Salford Lads Club memorial or the St Ignatius memorial, but he is not. Salford Lads Club opened in 1903 and still retains all the information of past members, it may be worth contacting them salfordladsclub.org.uk/contact-us-2/You can view a map of the area in 1905 at the following link i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj249/shred67/map.jpgThere is a Roman Catholic church near by, St Joseph's, which we have not visited yet, we shall try to get there soon. I may be being a little slow but I do not fully understand your question. Sorry.

They were Roman Catholics, and St Joseph's might have been their church at the time.
Those addresses: the family had lived in Ordsall Lane untill at least 1911. In directories and electoral rolls I see they lived on Oldfield Road. Tatton Street from about 1921/22.
When he gets killed, the family is notified, the address in the records would not be Tatton Street. I could imagine, if someone is missing, there would be a final message much later.
Why else would an administration of later addresses be kept?

The next of kin info on the CWGC was compiled (or updated) after the war and therefore this is their post war address (early 1920s).
Hope this helps Pete

I will be visiting the Local History Library on Wednesday, I will check the Salford Reporter for any notifications of Stephen's death.

Thanks Pete, that's clear.
And Gary, I'll be in the Salford Library myself the week after next, but thank you for the offer. I must not forget my camera!

Loes, St Joseph's does not have a memorial or book of remembrance showing the mens names. The church decided to have a belfry built in 1924 in memory of the parishioners who fell in the Great War.

Not easy to lose that in a forgotten cellar ...
It reminds me, was there anything in Mount Carmel's?

;D Made me chuckle.
Sorry Loes, I don't remember any discussion regarding Mount Carmel's. Would you kindly jog my terrible memory?

No earlier discussion as far as I know. - RC - Ordsall - that reminded me of Mount Carmel. Was anything rescued from there or would it all bulldozed away?

I can't see anything that may suggest the church had a memorial but will bear in mind when next at the library. I am finding that very few Roman Catholic churches had memorials that named the men who had fallen or served.
