Christ Church Patricroft E Bateson Ernest Manchester Regiment 1/6th battalion 2370 died 4/6/1915 CWG Age 25 son of Mrs E Bateson of 10 Stafford St Hunslett Rd Leeds Panel 158 to 170 Helles Memorial Born Leeds enlisted Manchester , he is the only E Bateson on CWG Wendy Rough transcription: ECCLES SPORTSMEN KILLED IN ACTION News has been received of the death at the Dardanelles of Private Ernest Bateson, 1/6th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Private Bateson, who resided at Moss House, Trafford Park, was well known in football and cricket circles in Eccles, being one of the first team wing three-quarters of the Eccles Rugby Club, and a regular playing member of the Eccles Cricket Club's 2nd eleven. He was engaged at Messrs Taylor Brothers and Co. Ltd, Trafford Park and Leeds, as analytical chemist, and was the son of Mr and Mrs T Bateson, of 16 Stafford Street, Hunslet Road, Leeds. He would have been 26 years of age on Sunday last. A comrade, writing to his friends an account of his death, says:- "As I was with Ernest and knew him very well I thought it my duty to write you a few lines. We had an enormous charge, captured three trenches and I noticed - as I expected - Ernest was one of the first all the way forward on our particular front. When we got to the final trench (we had set out to capture at bayonet point, or rather beyond it - because a few of us went too far) he said to me midst the shrapnel and bullets: 'I wouldn't miss this for anything.' He just looked as if he had scored a try at rugby. This was his spirit all through - fearless. At night time the enemy counter attacked. Ernest and I were put on guard over the second trench, which was unoccupied - as they found out at the last moment. Fancy the support trench unoccupied. The enemy came along, broke down through a kind of ravine, and were working their way up the trench we were guarding. Ernest shouted "Halt, who goes there?" They answered in English 'All right' or 'Friend'; then I heard them jabbering in an undertone. I knew then who they were. Ernest was shot; went down like a hero without a murmur. The man who shot him I shot him through the head as dead as a log, also two more. They didn't advance any further along that trench. I had my brother killed, oh! nearly everybody is killed or wounded who took part in the battle, but the enemy must have got it also. Everybody who knew 'Batey' knew the only part he could play in any game - war or otherwise. I am only writing on behalf of the few left, and trust it will strengthen you in your thoughts to know how manly and bravely he acted to the last." The above article also tells of the death of John Burton Pickup (not named on this memorial). Rank:Lance Corporal Service No:840 Date of Death:04/06/1915 Age:26 Regiment/Service:Manchester Regiment 1st/6th Bn. Panel Reference: Panel 159 to 171. Memorial:HELLES MEMORIAL Additional Information:Son of John and Emma Pickup, of 87, Easton Rd., New Ferry, Cheshire. Official Intimation has been received of the death, in the same action, of Private J H Pickup (25), another member of the Eccles Cricket Club. He was also a member of the Eccles Lacrosse Club. His family now reside at New Ferry, but formerly lived in Wellington Road. Deceased lodged in Trafford Road, Eccles, for the convenience of his business and engagements in Manchester. At the weekly meeting of the Cricket Club Committee on Monday evening, letters of condolence were ordered to be sent to the families of the deceased sportsmen.
