He lived at 40 Renshaw St Patricroft. He was one of the tallest men in the Battalion, which he had joined when he was 14. He worked at the Ford motor works in Trafford Park and in his last letter home he said he was a stretcher bearer 'We could just do with one or two of our (Ford) cars here,it's terrible carrying wounded men down to the base.(From Hell let loose)

C Snell is the Great grandfather of forum member Sue Tydd. She wrote:
Pte, Charles Stell. Born 1881 Skipton, moved to Police Street Patricroft early 1911. Worked Nasmyths on Green Lane. Enlisted Sept 1914 L/F's. Posted to France in 1915 then shortly after to Gallipoli, wounded on Lancashire Landings beach at Gallipoli on first day of battle. Two days to evacuate him from the beach. Recovered in hospital in Alexandria. Returning to Gallipoli 13th August 1915 aboard HRT Royal Edward which was torpedoed by a german U - Boat, grandad drowned.
