I hope you can help. I am trying to trace my two great uncles without success. They were both born in Salford and at the 1901 census Thomas was living on Hampson Street with his mother Jane.I remember and old photo on my gt grandmother's sideboard of a man in army uniform, and was always told that his name was Tommy and he died in WW1. I have found army records of various Tommy Bevans but none are " my " Tommy. Do you have any records of my gt uncles Regards Carolyn

If these are Thomas & john Bevan's marriages, then Thomas didn't die during the war> Both have a father Thomas, Occupation-Warehouse-man ( I know Thomas Jr say father deceased & John doesn't, but John may have failed to inform them ) & have an Edith Emily Bevan as a witness, possibly sister of both men? Plus both Thomas & john's age fit?

Carolyn,
Welcome to the forums.
After checking numerous sources I, like Ben, cannot find any evidence of the death of your Thomas Bevan during the Great War.
There was a John Bevan from Patricroft who died JOHN BEVAN Rank:Private Service No:9900 Date of Death:03/04/1918 Regiment/Service:Lancashire Fusiliers 16th Bn. Grave Reference: C. 2. Cemetery:QUESNOY FARM MILITARY CEMETERY BIRTH PLACE: Patricroft, Lancs DEATH PLACE: France and Flanders ENLISTMENT PLACE: Salford, Lancs TYPE OF CASUALTY: Killed in action
But he could be one of two men: John Bevan Jane abt 1891 Patricroft, Patricroft Son Eccles, Lancashire (your relation) John Bevan abt 1898 Patricroft, Lancashire, England Nephew Eccles, Lancashire
Unfortunately I cannot find any further information to pin him down for sure.

me again Ben. So the John Bevan who died in the Great War was not the brother of Edith Emily Bevan ( witness at his wedding) because this wedding is dated 19th July 1919 and Private John Bevan died 3/4/18. It is certainly my family though and I will now work out the connection. BTW how on earth did you find out about the gratuity paid to Private Bevan's grandmother. May I ask one more thing? Where was Private Bevan killed? All the best Carolyn

hi Ben, I#ve sent for a birth cert for the John who was killed. Although I have searched I've not come across a record of the gratuity paid to his grandmother you mention in your post. Please will you guide me to this record. Many thanks Carolyn xxx

John Bevan was killed close to Ayette (approx 15 miles south of Arras) in France. The following page (provided by forum member prospectroad) is taken from the 16th Lancashire Fusiliers war diary, showing events from the 1st April - 3rd April 1918. As John's death was assumed to be on the 3rd or shortly after I would think that he was one of the 9 missing (right hand margin).
