I have read some articles that suggest that Mariner's Canal, Salford Quays was named in remembrance of Salford V.C winner William Mariner. Would other members of the forum agree that this is a memorial?

If there is supporting evidence to show that it was named in his honour, then yes, in my opinion, I would definitely accept that as constituting a memorial.

Thanks Jim, For proof we need to look for evidence pre 1989 as per the date of the canal. Attachments:

Would other members of the forum agree that this is a memorial? I can see the point.....but roads and parks and blocks of flats named after people who died in wars would have to be considered. I think there's a difference between a memorial, a place to remember and somthing that just bears the name. I know its not a war thing but Mark Addy bridge isn't a memorial (is it?)....his memorial is in Weaste. William Mariner is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial. I may be wrong and talking a load of tosh!! He was born in Chorley.

Broomy,
After pause for thought I agree with you. Doesn't hurt to leave it on the forums for those with an interest to see.
Cheers.

Oh yes------totally agree, anything to generate debate.

Oh yes------totally agree, anything to generate debate. ;D I prefer to call it an executive decision. Jim can argue debate if he wishes.

I'm open to the general concensus. Broomy makes a good point. I suppose a 'memorial' would be somewhere specifically intended as a focal point for memory of that group, event or individual, as opposed to a commemoratively named general utility object (such as in this case, perhaps?). In such a way that a Thiepval Street somewhere wouldn't be in and of itself a 'memorial', though named to commemorate the historical event.
