I wanted to make you aware of a project which may be of interest to your members.
The project, supported by the SmartWater Foundation, UK National Inventory of War Memorials and War Memorials Trust, is called In Memoriam 2014 and its main aim is to provide greater protection for war memorials in the United Kingdom. I know that the Salford area has already had problems with vandalism (for instance St John's Church in Higher Broughton. See www.ukniwm.org.uk/server/show/conMemorial.15936/fromUkniwmSearch/1). Sadly, criminals are increasingly targeting the plaques for their scrap metal value. This project will provide SmartWater, a forensic liquid, free of charge to vulnerable and at risk war memorials. This high temperature solution can withstand burning and melting making it harder for criminals to dispose of stolen memorials. It also acts as a significant deterrent to those considering desecrating our war memorials by massively increasing their chances of detection and subsequent arrest.
In Memoriam 2014 also hopes to encourage local communities and youth groups to locate and take responsibility for their local war memorial. The information obtained from those that apply will be used to support UK National Inventory of War Memorials to both develop and update its register of war memorials in the United Kingdom. War Memorials Trust will also benefit from improved information about memorial custodians, enabling the Trust to contact them more efficiently when a problem is reported.
The website is currently being built and when that is up and running, we will be taking expressions of interest/applications. In the meantime, you can follow us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/InMemoriam2014 and/or Twitter: twitter.com/InMemoriam2014 to keep up-to-date with the project's running.
