Judging by a message on the Facebook group, it looks like work may have commenced on this project, as it has been reported that scaffolding has gone up around the memorial. Rest assured, we will be keeping any eye on the progress of the regeneration and the status of the memorial.

I have received an as-yet unconfirmed report that this memorial has suffered some damage recently during the course of the works mentioned above. I am not able to confirm this myself, but if anyone is in the vicinity and can take a look, and even better get a photo, I'd be very grateful.

I have just been reading on FB about the alleged damage, not seen any photos as yet.
"had quite a shock today, those of you who know the Salford area, will be familiar with"THE SHOUTING FUSILIER" on chapel street, a memorial opened by Queen Victoria. An artical was run in the local paper on how the council were going to revamp the statue with a few new trees, Hazel Blears (MP) got in on the act with her big fat lying smile..Well if you can go look.. the whole base has been dug out..the base is also damaged, with a large chip of the corner.. NO care or consideration has been taken, what a mess.. this is a DISGRACE and a INSULT not to mention CRIMINAL. iF YOUR AS ANGERED BY THIS AS ME PLEASE CALL BURY HQ AND MUSEUM TO COMPLAIN"
*Obviously we are a non-political group/website, I have merely copy and pasted the FB post as is.

Article in Salford Advertiser 22/09/2011. Just for the record SWARM have been in touch with Salford Council with regards to the damage. I am pleased to say that some of Councillor's comments seem to answer some of the points we raised with them. Attachments:

The work on, and around, the memorial are progressing well. The attached article was published in the Salford Advertiser (16/02/2012). Exact details of the work being carried out are: • Thoroughly and carefully clean down the stonework and statue by ‘Doff’ Method utilising super-heated water only. No chemicals or additives to be used • Repair Damaged areas of Stone work • Re-point joints in Plinth • Remove Flaking lettering and re-paint • Re-instate missing lead lettering and paint • Replace eyelets to plinth Attachments:

24th June 2012 14.45 to 16.00
Chapel Street's 'shouting fusilier' war memorial has been in place since 1905, but recently, as part of the improvement works in the area, the memorial has been restored and the landscaped to bring this important piece of the city's history up to date. A rededication ceremony has been organised by the Lancashire Fusiliers and all are welcome to join in the service to mark the next phase in Chapel Street's future.
