Lt Harold F Robinson (Fletcher) died 1/7/16 Probate 12/3/17 Harold Fletcher Robinson of 117 Claremont Rd Pendleton , to Emma Robinson wife of Thomas Fletcher Robinson effects £257 17s 1911 census Born Moston 1892 ,occupation Cotton cloth salesman From Gods Own 1st Salford Pals second in command of D company He was born in Moston in 1892 , the son of Emma and Thomas Fletcher Robinson ,who later lived at 117 Claremont Rd Pendleton. His father was a silk waste , silk , mohair and cotton yarn manufacturer in Manchester. Harold went to Manchester Grammar School and was in the University OTC. A Sunday school teacher at the Unitarian Sunday School , Cross Lane, he served on the governing body of the District Association of Unitarian Churches. He was a member of Swinton Park Hockey Club, Barrfield Tennis Club and West Salford Young Liberals, and worked in the Portland St offices of Ashton Brothers &Co cotton manufacturers. He was commissioned 2/Lt in October 1914 and gazetted Lietenant in September 1915. Sgt Lawless wrote" Lieutenant Robinson was always anxious for the welfare of his men, whose confidence he gained, and was one of the bravest officers , and he proved this on many occasions. For instance , one night , in the same sector from which we went into action, we had a patrol out and the Germans turned their machine guns on them and wounded three of our patrol. As soon as Lt Robinson heard of it he dashed over the top straight away and brought in two of the wounded, his orderly Private Wilson bringing the third man. On the 14th of November the Battalion (15th LF) returned to the Thiepval area and marched to the dugouts in Paisley Avenue, where they wer to be in support below Thiepval for a proposed attack by the 56th Brigade of the 19th Division. This attack was cancelled owing to bad weather and the men took the opportunity to search for their comrades killed on 1st of July Private Peter Harrison stated "The Chaplain of the 15th Lancashire Fusiliers with Lt Gribble and Lt Lord did the burying. The bodies had been lying there more than 4 months , and were unrecognisable except by paybooks ,officers belts etc. Among those identified were Lieutenants Wright and Robinson , both were buried on the right of the Hammerhead Sap, leading up to the sunken road.

Ned I also feel very sad when reading these posts.Maybe it's because we feel these men died gloriously in battle, fighting for their country. Then I look around at the state of the world today and I ask myself WHY.
