:poppy: Although not a Salford man, I would like to remember here a man who made the supreme sacrifice in World War II in the service of King and Country.
Name: McCULLOCH, KENNETH
Rank: Pilot Officer (Pilot)
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Unit Text: 619 Sqdn.
Age: 31
Date of Death: 15/06/1943
Service No: 145513
Additional information: Son of George Alfred and Elizabeth Ann McCulloch, of Liverpool; husband of Audrey Muriel McCulloch, of Great Crosby, Liverpool.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Plot JJB. Grave 88.
Cemetery: EINDHOVEN (WOENSEL) GENERAL CEMETERY
Pilot Officer McCulloch and his crew were one of 197 Lancaster bombers dispatched on a raid to Oberhausen in Germany on the night of 14th/15th June 1943. 17 of these aircraft did not return. This was only their squadron's third operation raid, their first having been on the night of 11th/12th June to Dusseldorf.
Today I enjoyed the supreme privilege of meeting the Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch, Bishop of Manchester, who is the son of Pilot Officer Kenneth McCulloch, and also in my opinion an exceedingly nice gentleman. I hope Bishop Nigel will be pleased by and accept this small tribute to his courageous and selfless father.
We will remember Pilot Officer McCulloch with gratitude and honour. :poppy:
