The Lady Chapel (pictured below) was created out of the north Chancel Aisle and was dedicated on the 14th of June 1917 to the Rev'd Sydney F Hutton. The Rev'd S F Hutton had volunteered for service in the First World War. He was reported missing on the 7th of October 1916 and a short time later confirmed dead. He was the son of the Rev'd F R C Hutton of Ashton and had been a curate at St Peter's for three years. He had charge of the school Church of St Stephen. Sydney was 32 years old when he died.

Name: JOHNSON, LESLIE Initials: L Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment/Service: Royal Welsh Fusiliers Unit Text: 24th (Denbighshire Yeomanry) Bn. Age: 25 Date of Death: 27/12/1917 Service No: 31360 Additional information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnson, of 59, Partington Lane, Swinton, Manchester. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: G. 84. The advance to Jerusalem took a further year, but from 1914 to December 1917, about 250 Commonwealth prisoners of war were buried in the German and Anglo-German cemeteries of the city. By 21 November 1917, the Egyptian Expeditionary Force had gained a line about five kilometres west of Jerusalem, but the city was deliberately spared bombardment and direct attack. Very severe fighting followed, lasting until the evening of 8 December, when the 53rd (Welsh) Division on the south, and the 60th (London) and 74th (Yeomanry) Divisions on the west, had captured all the city's prepared defences. Turkish forces left Jerusalem throughout that night and in the morning of 9 December, the Mayor came to the Allied lines with the Turkish Governor's letter of surrender. Jerusalem was occupied that day and on 11 December, General Allenby formally entered the city, followed by representatives of France and Italy. Meanwhile, the 60th Division pushed across the road to Nablus, and the 53rd across the eastern road. From 26 to 30 December, severe fighting took place to the north and east of the city but it remained in Allied hands. JERUSALEM WAR CEMETERY was begun after the occupation of the city, with 270 burials. It was later enlarged to take graves from the battlefields and smaller cemeteries in the neighbourhood, including:- BETHLEHEM GERMAN CEMETERY, in which one man of the Australian Light Horse was buried in June 1918. Leslie attested on the 7th June 1915 aged 24. In civilian life he had worked as a clerk. Leslie is remembered on the Lychgate, the Adelphi Lads' Roll of Honour, and on his family's gravestone in Swinton Cemetery (Link to grave)..

Its possible the Jack Withers is in fact John Withers of 11 Bain Street, Swinton. 16th L/F's 15010, lost his life 27th May 1918. Also enlisted from the same address was his brother in law Samuel Youngman 15179 also of the 16th. Samuel survived the war although was discharged from service 17th August 1917. Another brother in law of Jack Withers was Frederick Greer 10th L/F's 34374, killed 20th may 1917, Frederick was the husband of Beatrice (withers). Will let you know when I find more details of John. His niece is still living and some of the family research being undertaken is jogging her memory a little about the war history of the family. Fred Greer

I think we have posted the incorrect details for this man. I believe that he is: THOMAS CROMPTON Rank: Lieutenant Date of Death: 13/04/1918 Age: 21 Regiment/Service: The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) 1st Bn. Panel Reference Panel 1 and 2. Memorial PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL Additional Information: Son of Thomas Alfred and Mary Crompton, of The Beeches, Worsley Rd., Swinton, Manchester. Type of Casualty: Killed in action 1911 census - Thomas is seen as a 14 year old schoolboy living at The Beeches, Worsley Rd, Swinton, with his parents Thomas and Mary, and sister Nellie. You are correct. He is a cousin of my grandmother. In fact my parents still have cigarette case inscribed TC given to him on his 21 birthday shortly before his death.
