On November 11th Every Year we hold Rememberance Services all over the UK, we wear out Poppies with Pride, to remember the Fallen, not just in WW1 and WW2, but those in recent times as well, the Clergy attend these sevices, so WHY are there so many War Memorials, in such a State, why are they left unattended in Shut Down Buildings/Churches, that are to be demolished, where has the respect gone for the Men who Gave their Lives, so we could have a better Future, if this is it, then what was it for !!! The Co-Founders and their Members, WILL REMEMBER THEM, and will fight tooth and Nail to get these Memorials BACK where they can be looked after and Cared for !!! I am so Angry What are your thoughts ?? :poppy: :poppy: :poppy: :poppy:

The point i'm making is....its not just being 'scrubbed up' for forthcoming events.

Some main town / city memorials are part of a regular cleaning and maintenance programme (at least for now, who knows with the spending cuts). However, there are lots of in smaller places that are only cared for by members of the the local community, apart from a quick spruce up in the immediate run-up to remembrance day.
Also, increasingly in recent years, incidents of vandalism to war memorials have increased immediately prior to Remebrance Sunday - with the damage only being found on the morning of services.

My Late Father-in-Law was a soldier in WW2..He was based on Malta for five years...Things there were pretty bad, as the Germans tried to starve the Island...
We have gone over there for Rememberance day, for 20 years.. The Maltese people are fantastic, and Rememberance day is held in great esteem...The parades are a grand affair...Lot's of Soldiers go there every year for the service.. They Parade wearing their medals, and the Maltese President is always in attendance.. It has brought tears to my eyes, the way our brave ex servicemen are clapped, and praised, as they march by..
Once the service is over, back in the hotels, the fun begins....they sing all the old songs from the war..and a good time is had by all...
We have noticed these last couple of years, that the soldiers ( and Sailors ) are slowly dying away....but at least they have had the respect of the local people....
THe cemetery is immaculate...full of our young men...who gave their lives for us...
What a pity, our Memorials and cemeterys are not kept the same.....

Thanks for sharing that Elaine By the way, I was talking to someone the other week, who said the Swinton War Memorial was in a Terrible State, so I guess each to his own opinion as to how you look at things. I would expect in a small way to find those Memorials exposed to the elements not to be 100%, what annoys me is those that are in buildings which are accessed by people who can do something about keeping those Memorials in a respectable condition
