I will see if I can find anything further when I visit the Salford History Library next week. I know he is at 41 Raglan St in the Absent Voters List 1918. The last time I was in Salford I meant to check the address in the normal Electoral Register whether they listed Amy and Thomas Glover. It would have proven his parentage - his mother was Amy Garnett, unknown father. I knew the first part (Pendleton) is really in tatters, so I think I just didn't bother. The only other things I ever found was his medal index card, and the awarding of the Croix the Guerre in the London Gazette, 8 October 1918 (Page 3 of 12) 61418 Corporal William Garnett, late Royal Field Artillery (Manchester -!-). In 1901 he was living with his grandmother and uncle Thomas Garnett in Reddish Street. Uncle Thomas an Army pensioner, who told exciting stories about his army days. It wouldn't surprise me if William was inspired by him and decided to enlist at a young age. Loes

Loes,
Did you check the Salford Reporter of the year of Williams death? It may have had a decent sized article giving some of the details that you are looking for.

No. I have gone through the papers from 1914-1919, for Weaste interments. I had to force myself not to be distracted by the war news, the casualties etc. I only had a few hours, and by the time I reached 1918, the only name that interested me was Collins.

Wendy, the below website may help. The Ship Canal War Memorial is at the Boat Museum at Ellesmere Port and contains a list of the fallen (although I notice straightaway that Thomas Brassington isn't on the memorial): www.carlscam.com/manchester/shipcanal.htmThe following men came from Irlam and Cadishead and their biographies are in A District At War: - Thomas, Stanley and John Joseph Mears (brothers) - George Vinton - James Eve (First day of the Somme) - Stanley Shawcross - Joseph Arrowsmith - George Etchells Hope this helps Pete
