As I am sure you all know that the Somme was a killing field for many of the men who left the streets of Salford. I wanted to share these pictures that I took when I went to the Somme a few years back. Many of the are the actual fields where Salford Pals were on the 1st July 1916. The First Picture is a small memorial in the village of Authuille, where the Pals were. The Pals were also on the main attack on Thiepval - a village that is now famous for the huge and stark memorial with many names of Salford pals on. Of the 24 officers and 650 men from the 1st Salford Pals who attacked Thiepval, 21 officers and 449 men became casualties. The events of the 1st July hit hard in Salford and as mentioned in another thread the 1st became known as Thiepval Day - something we should get started again ! Attachments:
