CYRIL HIRAM TOWNSEND Rank: Sergeant Service No: 1623085 Date of Death: 17/08/1944 Age: 20 Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 102 Sqdn. Panel Reference Panel 239. Memorial RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL Additional Information: Son of Cornelius John Townsend, J.P., and Sarah Townsend, of Salford, Lancashire. Cyril was my great-uncle, only two years older than my father and regarded by him as his brother. Nearly twenty years ago, with tremendous help from the RAF, 102 Squadron and others, I researched the story of his last flight for my father; the family never really knew what had happened to him. He was lost on the night of August 16/17th, 1944 as navigator of a Halifax flying from RAF Pocklington to Kiel. His aircraft was never heard from again after take-off, not claimed by the Luftwaffe and never found, and is assumed to have malfunctioned and gone down in the sea. Thank you for the photo of the memorial, it's good to have that and to know that he was remembered at his school; he's never forgotten within the family. All their names are inscribed in the book of remembrance at St Clement Danes, the central church of the RAF in London, where a page is turned every day; on the day that my father visited the church not long before he died, it was open at the page with Cyril's name. Here he is. View Attachmentwww.facebook.com/groups/bombercommandmemorialLouise
