Arthur Hulme was a Wireman on HMS Hood, the Royal Navy's famous flagship. He died at the battle in the Denmark Strait on 24th May 1941 when the hunted German battleship Bismarck was attacked by HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales. The Hood was destroyed during this engagement, which was a blow to both British and Commonwealth morale for a time, so beloved was this famous ship. HMS Hood's crew compliment consisted of some 1,418 men; only three survived the destruction of the Hood. Prince of Wales also suffered heavy damage and was forced to 'make smoke' and withdraw from the battle, though she continued shadowing Bismarck and her escort Prinz Eugen. Eventually Bismarck was sunk by a huge task force of Royal Navy vessels.
