Hi Eileen,
Thank you for posting this information. There is also a J Smethurst on the main memorial, he is believed to be:
James Smethurst born Swinton resident Pendlebury Private Welsh Regiment 18th Battalion 291406 died 23/11/1917 CWG Panel 7 Cambrai Memorial Louverval Born 1899 resident Farnworth Father Coal Hewer (1901 census).
Do you know if two J Smetursts are on the roll of honour?

Hi If my memory serves me right there are two J Smethursts on the roll. I would have to go into church to look again to be sure. On the main memorial outside the church J smethurst is on the right hand side. This is not my granddad as he came back form the ww1 war. Kind regards Eileen

Eileen,
Did you post some information about your J Smethurst (RAMC) on the Salford Forum? If you did I have not been able to check the AVL for him as we have not yet obtained the AVL for he Pendleton area. We will do our best to rectify this soon. In the meantime we will try and take a look at the libraries copy this week.

Eileen,
I presume that you have not read Loes post on the Salford forum?
She left this message:
Salford North Division Charlestown Ward Polling district N.A.
Two men at 11 Hope Street:
Hopwood, John, 59200 Pte., 455 H.D. Corps Smethurst, James, 106098 .Pte., R,A.M.C.
Loes
Does this address mean anything to you? Or the name John Hopwood?
There are only three men with a medal card called James Smethurst who served with the RAMC. There is a very high probability that this is your James.

I presume that your James is the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth who are living at 21 Hope St in 1901? If so I would say that Loes has found your James.

Mack are you thinking the same as I am?
Three overseas service chevrons which would indicate which of the two remaining James Smethursts he is.
A message I posted to Eileen in 2008 on the Salford forum.
"Eileen,
Just noticed your other thread regarding James on this forum. You stated that he was away from 1914 to 1918 I would say that the odds say that your James is James Smethurst 51195 as this is quite an early number and this is the only man who is awarded a 1915 star (the other two have no star so went abroad after 1915).
HTH"

hiya folks. dont pay to much attention to the address the soldier gives, many men in the AVLs dont live at the address, some are registering from relatives houses or army pals,in some cases from their sweethearts, some are listed in these AVLs at more than one address
these AVLs were published in november 1918,but that doesnt mean the soldier registered his vote around that time, ive found loads of men who are listed in both the salford+manchester AVLs,who were killed in late 1917

HI Mack.
Jim has the chevrons on the lower right sleeve of his uniform above his wrist. I will try to post a pic of him not sure how to do this but I will try. In 1914 my Jim was married with two children living in Pendlebury.
Regards
Eileen.

Eileen,
I spent 4 hours at the local history library this afternoon. I am sorry to say that James will not be mentioned in the AVL as at that time Pendlebury was not part of Salford. The AVLs do not cover that area and as far as I am aware none exist for that area. I tried looking through the Eccles Journal from 1914 onwards... the only reference I found was to a J Smethurst living at 259 Pendlebury Rd, Pendlebery who had enlisted (King's Royal Rifles) in Kitchener's army. The date of this publication was 16/10/1914.
If you are struggling to put a picture on the forum you can send it by email to salfordwarmemorials@talktalk.net and we shall post it on your behalf.
