Thanks to links and information on this board I now have confirmation that my great-grandfather Douglas Robertson was killed in action on 25th April 1918.
Douglas Robertson was born on 19 May 1878 in Anderston , Glasgow. The son of Douglas Robertson and Mary (formerly Thorley, whose father Mark was a publican in Eccles).
Douglas married Ellen Hopwood (from Failsworth) at Patricroft Parish Church on 26 August 1899. He was a Plasterer like his father.
I believe they had six children including my grandmother, Nellie (m. Lewis Davies) and lived in Salters Lane, Barton then Eliza Ann Street, Eccles.
In 1911 they lived in Chorlton Avenue, Patricroft.
Douglas joined the Salford Pals - I dont have details of his registration other than service number 17708 19th Bn, Lancashire Fusiliers.
The postcard photo attached has only a short message on the reverse and I am unsure which of the three soldiers is Douglas.
According to the Salford Roll of Honour document :
"The Battalion took part in the severe fighting at Kenmiel Hill in the fourth battle of Ypres, Aprii, 1918. Ont the llth of Aprii they moved from Menili Roacl to Kemmel, with orders to hold it at ali costs. On the 15th and 16th they were heavily shelled, and lost Lients. Gregory and Procter. On the 25th, after intense shelling, the enemy attacked in a mist and save for reserves, after a most gallant defence, the Battalion, including the C.O., were captured or killed.
"
According to the CWGC Douglas is commemorated at TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
His name is on the Memorial in St Andrews Church.
