Hello all,
My name is Jamie and I have a huge interest in the social history of Salford. My interest stems from hearing stories about the two world wars from my gran on whit lane. Various members of my family fought in the Crimea, Indian Mutiny, North West Frontier, Boer War, First World War and the Second World War. My gran went through the Blitz and was also an eyewitness to the remains of the crashed Lancaster in the Irwell. I look forward to reading and discussing the many posts about Salford's history and also look forward to helping keep alive the memory of the men and women of this truly special, although often misunderstood, city.

Hello Gary, My great, great Grandfather (my grans granddad)was called john Rosamond (army no.3294) and was from Bethnal Green in London, he was a corporal in the 33rd foot and fought at Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol and in the Indian Mutiny. I know that he died around 1909 in Manchester/Salford but, unfortunately, I do not know where he was buried. His son, also John Rosamond, was a private in the Lancashire Fusiliers around 1880 in India. My Gran's dad, Peter Holt was married to John Rosamond's (senior)daughter Catherine, and Joined the King's Own Royal Lancaster Militia at Regent Road Barracks in 1897. he fought in the Boer War and I can recall my gran saying he was also in the First world war (although I can't find any proof of this). My Gran's brother, John Holt, was in the rearguard at Dunkirk with 1/8th LF, and was captured, spending the rest of the war in Lamsdorff POW camp. On My Grandad's side, His father was an LF and was shellshocked on the Somme in 1915, and my grandfather was a medic in Burma (siege of Imphal). I don't know a great deal about my dad's side of the family, other than that his dad was on the Arctic Convoys (RN), and his father may have been at Gallipoli (possibly with the RND). I would love to learn as much as I can about all of them, and I am sure this site will help me do that.

Hello Garry, I am amazed, and delighted, at the results of your search. I really appreciate your effort to help! John Rosamond junior was born in Sheffield AFAIK and Peter Holt was from the Weaste area. Here's some more info about my relatives, which might help (army no.s, names, regiments etc.): Private Peter Holt 6052, 3rd KORL., private john Rosamond (junior) 2382 LF., Fusilier J Holt 3449928 LF., Private James Wallwork 19117 LF (grandfather's dad). Private William Wallwork (Grandad) 7373739 RAMC. It is possible that my granddad's dad, James Wallwork was a 'scuttler' as he was from the Greengate area and was a 'bit of a character' by all accounts! Unfortunately I do not have much more info than that.

The information about John being born in Sheffield is corroborated by the 1871 census that I have posted. There is a copy of an attestation form filed under Pension Records on Ancestry. They give the following details: Name: John Rosamond Gender: Male Birth Date: abt 1880 Birth Place: Sheffield, Yorkshire, England Marriage Date: 28 Dec 1904 Marriage Place: Salford Age: 34 (I think he may have shaved a few years from his age to try and get in) Document Year: 1914 Regimental Number: 2826 Regiment Name: Rifle Brigade Papers signed on the 31st August 1914 Discharged as medically unfit on the 19th September 1914 Married Annie Hill on the 28/12/1904 at St Phillip's Churvh, Salford Two children - George and Kate Living at 72 West Fleet St If this is your John the above information does not mean that he did not go on to serve during WW1 as I have seen lots of cases of men failing medicals, being discharged only to join up again and serve. There are two WW1 medal cards for men named John Rosamond: John Rosamond Royal Field Artillery 198611 John Rosamond Lanc Fus 8th 2404 I have also checked the 1918 Salford Absent Voters list. John's name is not there, but there is a William Rosamond living at 70 West Fleet St, Salford (next door to the address shown on John's attestation form).

Utilizing the 1918 absent voters list I have found a Peter Holt registered at 18 Blackburn Buildings, Salford. If this is your Peter he first served with the Liverpool Regiment (73707) and later transferred to the Labour Corps (54403). A transfer to the Labour Corps was usually due to an injury/wounds or illness sustained during service.

Thanks for the info Garry, From what you've uncovered, It looks like my Gran's cousin William (who I was completely unaware of!) was in the Dardanelles with the RMLI, amazing! It just goes to show, you look on a forum for info about relatives you are sure you know about, and others turn up who you had no idea even existed, brill!
Cheers Shred.

Jamie, If William was fit and well by May 1916 he would have fought in the Battle of Jutland. link
