Hello, I was recently given a photo of a family member, and was told that the picture was taken at Victoria park in swinton. The girl in the picture was born in 1926, so I'd say the picture was taken in the 1930's Anyone recognise the memorial behind the girl? Alison.

Hi Alison, I am only aware of one memorial that was originally located in Victoria Park, Swinton. That is the Swinton (Cenotaph) memorial, but they do not look like the same memorial to me.

Having looked at the pictures for a while now I think that it may be the same memorial. It looks as if some of the lower tiers may have been discarded when the memorial was moved. I will see if I can find any pictures of the memorial in its original state.

Thanks shred, is thought it might have been swinton cenotaph, but it did look slightly different, so was unsure. It would be great if you find any old pictures of it.

Hi Alison, Here are some pictures of the memorial sited in Victoria Park. It seems that I was wrong in my conjecture that a few tiers of stones had been removed. I wonder if the park was actually Parr Fold Park in Walkden?

Does the current memorial in Victoria Park include a WW2 plaque? There is the possibility that the WW1 memorial was replaced after WW2 for one which covered both wars. Newspapers would cover the story.
Garry, do you know when the two photos you posted were taken?
Cheers Pete

Sorry for the late response Pete.
There isn't a memorial currently in the park. The memorial that now stands outside the Civic Centre in Swinton once stood in Victoria Park. The memorial was moved and the WW2 boards added.
I did not notice any dates given on the pictures.
