It has been suggested that George Ashton of 192 Great Clowes Street is the man on the Old Salfordians memorial and the St. Clement’s with St. Matthias memorial. He is an obvious candidate whom I was satisfied with, until I looked at his very brief army record.

He enlisted on 3rd December 1914, but his record says that two days later, on 5th December, he was “discharged, not likely to become an efficient soldier”. Unless someone can prove he somehow managed to get back in again, we must rule him out.

I’m afraid I’m unable to offer an alternative, just thoughts. The Sacred Trinity Thiepval memorial to men killed on 1st July 1916 has a G. Ashton with the 16th Bn. Lancs. Fus. (2nd Pals), but there isn’t a match for him on the CWGC website. 9 Ashtons died that day, but none had an initial G. Just one died the next day, 12536 Private George Ashton, serving with that battalion. The chances are, this is the guy on the Sacred Trinity memorial, but if he is not the guy who lived on Great Clowes St, who is he?

Whoever he is, he is not necessarily the man on the other two memorials. For them, we also need to consider 1432 Private George Ashton who was born in Blackburn in 1888 or ’89 and killed at Gallipoli on 29th June 1915, serving with 1st Bn. Lancs Fusiliers, when his parents John & Bella Ashton were living at 23 Collier Street, Blackfriars Road, Salford. He was a professional soldier, serving with the LF in the 1911 census, and he was in India in 1914 when war broke out in Europe.
