Hi All, This chap died near Flers on 11/10/1916. SDGW says he was born in Salford. I can't find out much about him and wonder if the forum has any details.
Thanks in anticipation.

He is listed in the City Battalions book as Platoon 6 Company B, 17th Manchesters. He is on the photograph but unfortunately the names are not linked to the actual positions on the photo.
Hope this helps Pete

There is an Alexander Mackie who married a Margaret Morgan at st. Paul, Pendleton, Salford 1899 on Lancashire BMD but no way of proving if he is the same man?

Tim,
Not a lot of information out there. Cannot find him on the 1911 census, no service record, no entry in the Manchester Evening News index and I cannot see a birth in Salford for him.
His medal card shows that he disembarked in France on the 08/11/1915 and was eligible for the 1915 Star, the British War and Victory medals. If the Salford Local History Library is open on Wednesday I will check if anything was published after the report of his death.

Hi Garry, have you looked in the AVL's (I haven't got access to them)?

Pete,
There are 2 x James Mackie, 1 Charles Mackie and 1 Thomas Chamberlin Mackie. As Alexander died in 1916 I did not expect an entry, worth checking though as a few men who died early on in the war are listed.

The war diaries for 11th October show that B Company was in the front line trenches at Flers. They were heavily shelled and suffered a number of casualties. They were relieved in the evening (from themanchesters.org).

By 1913 it looks like they had moved from that address? 1913 directory there is no Sutton or Mackie list on Lawn grove, MilesPlatting. At 19 Lawn grove, MilesPlatting. Jeremiah Butt - Printers assistant.

Thanks for all your help everyone. I'd literally lost my thread here!
Mack had already covered quite a lot of ground, but the census info. is new and great.
Many thanks.
