Bootneck, We have yet to unearth any information with regards to the inscription on the plaque and until information is found I would have thought that there is nothing that can be done by Salford Council. Does anyone know if planning permission would have been required for this type of building (built 1930)? I am wondering if any submitted plans may hold the answer. A little more information for forum readers. Details of the plaque from the UKNIWM site: A picture of the unveiling.

I have just emailed a contact at Salford Council asking if - Planning permission would have been required for such a building in 1930?
- Are these records still available?
- Presuming that all above are answered “yes”. Can we arrange access to the record?

I'm not sure of the exact year but think planning as we know it came in with the Town and Country Planning Act in the 1950's. Before this there were fewer restrictions. It's sometimes debatable though whether current planning system the system is better or worse. But that's a debate for another forum!!! :-)

Bootneck,
I have had a reply from my contact who has passed on my questions to the planning department and SLHL. It may take a while but if the answer is out there we shall do our best to find it.

I lived in Winton/Monton since 1968 and I can never remember any plaque. I hope SCC pull finger out.

Bootneck,
I cannot reply on behalf of Salford Council. I can only reiterate that we will try and find if any details inscribed on the plaque are out there. Without these details we will struggle to have a plaque re-instated, although we could attempt to have a carefully worded modern plaque erected. This would require a great deal of communication with the council and the Monton Village Community Association. The MVCA have a forum, it may be worth posting on there and asking for their opinion.
If anyone wants to organise a clean-up of the shelter I will be the first to volunteer to turn out.

Published 14/02/1930 Some more information. Salford Local History Library have kindly arranged for us to take a look at the Eccles Council meetings minutes for this period. Fingers crossed!

I have checked the council meeting's minutes (two tomes) and was unable to find any entries relating to the memorial. Checked planning and finance minutes, nothing! I managed to check half the 1930 Eccles Journal and only managed to spot the article shown in my last post.
The search continues.

It has now been proven beyond any doubt, thanks to two dedicated local historians, that the Monton Veterans Shelter is not a war memorial. In time information unearthed will be published on the Monton Village Community Association's website.
The shelter's page will be immediately removed from our website and the UKNIWM will be advised.
