Yeah Shred, Those lads, limbs missing, may have survived the war, but what a hard fight they would have on their hands surviving the rest of their lives, in that condition and without the generous benefit systems in place today.

I have just spent hours, going through photos on flickr, pages and pages of brilliant images of WW1!.
They are on National Library of Scotland's photostream nothing to do with Salford, but well worth a look!. liz

I can remember as a small child, seeing an ex serviceman stood on Deansgate, selling matches....He had one leg... What a way to treat a casualty of war.... I still feel sad, when I think of him
