W GREENWOOD Cannot identify. I believe that H M Kendal is Herbert Mowle Kendal. His medal card shows that he served with the French Red Cross. I also believe that he was the son of Thomas and Mary Kendal who are shown in the 1901 census as living at Gatley Hill House, Cheadle. Born in 1878. Herbert and his father had been silk merchants. He died at Soissons, France on the 28th May 1918. Herbert was also remembered on the Cheadle Congregational Church memorial (demolished). He is not commemorated by the CWGC.

The crew were ordered to return to base if the weather turned bad or if the pilot had to fly below 1000ft. It was thought that the pilot was trying to make a landing in bad weather and had broke cloud thinking he was actually over the sea and not over land. The aircraft crashed at 650 feet above sea level, it was totally wrecked and both airmen on board were killed. There was no fire reported.
