John married Mary (nee Smith) at Walkden Parish Church on the 29th of January 1898, they had three children Norman, Phillis and Ethel.
John, a 34 year old collier of 13 Makin St, Little Hulton, attested on the 11th of September 1914 and posted to the Army reserve. Embarked at Folkstone on the 25th Septemeber 1915, he was reported as missing on the 2nd of Decemeber 1915 and later presumed killed on that day.

Robert, a 22year old collier of 2 Allens St, Little Hulton, the son of John and Alice Ann, attested on the 11th of November 1914. Disembarked in France on the 6th of August 1915, attached to the 177 tunneling company on the 5th of October 1916 then back to the 1/5th LNLR on the 23rd of April 1917.
177th Tunnelling Company:
Formed at Terdeghem in June 1915, and moved into a wide area facing Wytschaete. Relieved there in November 1915, and moved to Railway Wood, where it remained for 2 years. March 1918 saw the Company working on construction of the Fifth Army's 'Green Line' near Templeux, when the enemy attack struck. After this the Company was engaged in Somme bridge demolition, and other defensive activities. link
