'After many years of research by Neil Drum and Pete Thomas a book telling the story of Irlam & Cadishead's part in the 'Great War' is now published. All profits go to a local charity. This book tells the story of over 1,000 men from the district who served in the Armed Forces during 1914-1918, many returned psychologically and physically scarred and over 200 are known to have lost their lives. It is timely that we remember the sacrifices made as, with the death of the last 3 First World War veterans living in the UK this year, the living link with that generation has now passed. Furthermore the tragic death of Cadishead soldier, Simon Annis, who was killed in action in Afghanistan in August this year, reminds us all that many from the district continue to serve their country today and the need to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice and those service personnel who return scarred, mentally and physically, from their service. The book can be purchased from: Hamilton Davies Trust Hamilton Davies House Liverpool Rd Cadishead Manchester, M44 5BG Tel 0161 222 4003 Salford Local history library, Irlam Library or Cadishead Library Download an order form here.

I bought a copy today at the Salford Local History Library, and made the 'mistake' of taking a peek on the bus back home. I got so absorbed that I nearly missed my stop! Seriously though, it's a cracking good book and worth every penny.

Thanks Garry, as you know all proceeds from the book are for charity and we are only interested in promoting the stories of the local men and women who served. We really want people to read it and understand what this generation of people went through. There are free copies available at Salford local history library and at irlam and cadishead libraries
