Thank you Ben for this info, not sure if I will be able to rturn this medal as don't know how to contact any family member, I am not very good at finding things out on the computer. I noticed that you had his parents mane and address, is this because he was single, only I would like to know a bit more about my grandfather's parents Arthur Turner, but he was married when he died so his next of kin would surely be his wife, do you agree, thanks, Hornbeam

I cannot trace any of Sam's or Ellen's descendants. Keep hold of the medal and treasure it, it may turn out that Sam is a distant cousin.
Sam's parents are named on the CWGC entry as they would have returned the paperwork to the IWGC (as it was known then). You are correct that Arthur's next of kin would have been his wife.

Hi again - sorry for late response but work takes me away a great deal. I can confirm that my Grandfather: Osman Turner had a brother called Walter. The whole family moved from Bradford to the Clegg Street area of Salford between 18881 and 1887. His mother was Julia Ann Abbott born 09/06/1850 in Thorndon All Saints, Sufflok and married John Thoman Turner (brn. 23/02/1847) in Bradford Parish Church on 20/06/1868. As far as I know, Osman at least remained in and around Clegg Street / Clegg Square until moving to Radcliffe in and around 1920 and at this time, Julia Ann moved with him. I know most of the remaining family remained in Salford beyond this point in time due to my mother travelling to see them. I have a photograph of at least 3 Turner brothers but this web space is not really allowing me to upload....any advice appreciated Best NigelM

Hi Nigel, sorry for late reply, but had given up with trying to find out more about my grandfather, Arthur Turner, until I saw your reply dated august 12,even though I have only read it today, 14th November, and I must admit that I am even more confused. This is my confusion, a Arthur Turner married my grandmother Margaret (nee Cowie) in September 1911, I have a copy of their marriage certificate which shows Arthur's age as 27, and his father was a John Thomas Turner (deceased), it also shows his occupation as warp dresser. According to the 1911 Census, my Arthur Turner is showing as a brother to your Osman his occupation as warp dresser and their father called John Thomas Turner, on the 1891 cencus, but not on the 1901 or 1911 the head if Julia. My father George was born in 1913 the same year as Walter, but I always thought they were cousins, but if we are on the same family surely Walter would have been his Uncle, and also, according to a friend of mine who is now 80 knew both Walter and Osman, but she called him Ossy and says they lived their until the late 60s/70s. So I am still not sure we are on the right family, but what I can piece together it does look as though my grandfather Arthur Turner, could have been your Grandfather Osman's brother. Hope this makes sense to you, I would love to hear from you soon, Lorraine T

Lorraine, Arthur's will is available for download linkNot cheap at £6.00. It would seem that he must have had a burial somewhere as his will wouldn't have been found had his body had not been found. I have a feeling that he was buried at sea?

Lorraine, After seeing the following information regarding the Helles Memorial I decided to dig further. From the CWGC: I then found a reference to a man who was buried at sea, linkYou will notice that the panel number "113 to 117" are the same as the panel numbers given for Arthur's inscription. I will send the CWGC an email and ask them to confirm that these panels are for the men buried at sea.

Lorraine,
I have received a message from the CWGC stating that it could be 6 weeks before they respond. I will copy their response on this thread as soon as I receive it.

I am happy that the will has given you some vital information.
Here is the reply from the CWGC. I don't think that they fully understood the question I was asking (probably my fault) as their response, and attached excel report, mainly focus on the men who served with the Navy.
