As per my other post - the 'missing' plaque that has been found in a scrapyard was replaced by the Council (it wasn't stolen off the memorial), at the request of the family of Corporal Frederick Noel Heywood. He was killed in action during the retreat to Dunkirk in May 1940 and was the first casualty from Irlam. For some reason his name was missed off the original plaque.
The talk of returning this plaque to Irlam would be, to me, disrespectful to his name.
Regards Pete

Here is the new/replacement plaque, which sits proudly on the Irlam and Cadishead War Memorial. Frederick's name is included on this plaque (where it should be). Attachments:

I've attached a copy of the plaque that has been 'found'. Although it's not the best photo, you can zoom into it and see, on the bottom left hand column where the 'H's are, that there is no HEYWOOD. Attachments:

i agree Pete, there is no need for it to be returned to Irlam its scrap , the council had it replaced by a contractor with a new one the old one then belonged either to the council or the contractor, its still scrap, the papers have a lot to answer to and so called people in the know for not doing there homework,

I am in agreement with Pete on this issue.
If the plaque was displayed it would be missing a name. If one of Frederick Haywood's family sees the plaque in the future and asks for his name to be added the plaque would be removed again and a new one hung in its replacement only for the old plaque to be found in twenty years and the same issues arise.
Maybe the best outcome would be for the plaque to be stored away with a comprehensive description of its history. I have another idea which may be infeasible .... I will discuss this directly with Pete.

I have noticed that the Daily Mail have hidden / removed mine and Pete's comments concerning the facts about the memorial plaque. Not unexpected considering the issue is such an evocative one, and is clearly stirring up heated feelings judging by the comments which they are choosing to display. They have now locked it from receiving further comments.

jim. they have removed your comments because the papers dont publish the truth, and you have both made them look foolish, they may have locked it because there may be some legal issues coming from the scrap dealer over the theft accusations, nice work by both of you,i luv it when someone makes an ass out of the media
