I am reseaching a family member.. thoughout his life he was in the Merchant Navy.. I have just found out, that during WW1 he spent time in the Royal Navy on a submarine.. His name is Charles James Allen.. DOB 1885 in London.. On his Marriage Certificate, his father is named as Patrick Allen( Soldier ) At the time of his marriage 1915 he was docked at Salford Docks. at this time he was back in the Merchant Navy.. My problem is, I cant find his birth in London ( It is he that told his family he was born in London ) I thought perhaps if his Submarine records could be found, perhaps they would say about his birth.. I also cannot find his father ( the soldier ) Patrick Allen.. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have come to a dead end...

Hi Elaine,
I have checked Ancestry and the National Archives, nothing jumps out for Charles James Allen.
Is it Charles who marries Mary H Diskin in Salford in 1915? Marriage: 16 Jul 1915 St Clement, Salford, Lancashire, England Charles James Allen - 37 Fireman R.N.R. Bachelor of 58 Granville St. Mary Hannah Diskin - 39 Widow of 58 Granville St. Groom's Father: Patrick Allen, Soldier Bride's Father: William Edward English, Labourer Witness: Clara McMullen; Lillian Bailey Married by Banns by: T. A. Hanson, Rector Register: Marriages 1907 - 1915, Page 235, Entry 470 Source: LDS Film 1786424
One of our members who has access to FMP may be able to find something. In the meantime I will continue looking.

hi Garry, Yes you have got them all correct... I have tried and tried , but cant find anything... We have a feeling perhaps he was'nt 37 years. as he was always saying he was different ages. Sometimes if he wanted to join a certain ship, he would say he was younger than he was, so that they would take him on board. When he married Mary Diskin, we think he said he was older, as she was older than him It would be great if we could find him, he is like the SCARLET PIMPERNEL :nana2: Thinking now, it must have been hard in those days, to have to lie about your age, to get work on a ship.. He was a Fireman.. Donkeyman.. harrd work, especially if you were trying to keep up with younger men !!!!

Your best bet would be his Merchant Naval records. If like my Great Grandfather who served throughout the Great War in the Merchants and continued in the service after the war his records should be available.
These give you a photo and Date of Birth and Place of Birth.
FMP has all these records.
There is a possibility for him but the date of birth is 10 years to what you have but is listed as born in Salford.
Someone with a subscription would be able to have a better look.

Ben,
Yes I had seen the thread. As per my first post
the answer was on FMP. It is a pity that we couldn't help Elaine with her enquiry here on the forum.

The reason i posted the link was maybe Elaine & Bungahigh could contact each other and swap any info they had as they seemed to be researching the same man?

On the Salford Discussion Forum, Simon Ludbrook has looked at FMP and managed to get me Charles Allen CR1 document from the Merchant Navy. On It , It says DOB 29th August 1875... Rating... Fireman Trimmer His Number was 993993... I am still deperate to find his birth certificate... I have been through every census on Ancestry... but God only knows where he is.. Elaine.. AKA Bungahigh ;D

You do know that if you think that is your man that was found on FMP, there could be a pouch for this man at the National Archives. FMP only has the CR1 cards and not the full pouch, that is if they survived. Click here for N.A. merchant seamen Ben
