Ian, that's really intersting and gratifying to see that the role of Elm Bank has been recognised. Here's a couple of extracts from "A District at War":
In early September 1914 two public meetings were held at St Mary‟s School in Cadishead to establish a local branch of the East Lancashire Division of the British Red Cross. The committee consisted of George Thomas JP (President), John A. Brew and Dr Jago (Vice Presidents), Mr F.U. Wilkinson (hon. treasurer), Joseph Cooke (hon. secretary) and a strong committee representing every church in the Irlam and Cadishead district. A Comforts Section was also organised. One of the first considerations for the committee was whether to establish and equip a local hospital for wounded soldiers or whether to support Elm Bank Hospital in Eccles. As there were no suitable premises in the district it was decided to support Elm Bank Hospital. The local branch of the Red Cross contributed 35 shillings a week towards the maintenance of the "Irlam and Cadishead bed‟ in the hospital and a notice was placed above the bed to this effect (on 25th March 1915 a second bed was supported and the contributions increased to 50 shillings a week)."
"In early 1917 the local branch of the British Red Cross decided that it would be better to become associated with Wibbersley Red Cross Hospital in Flixton rather than Elm Bank Hospital, Eccles. Wibbersley was more accessible than Eccles and there were several local Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) helpers working there. On 25th April, George H. Anderson, Honorary Secretary of Elm Bank Hospital, wrote to the Council:
"I am requested by my committee to forward you a resolution which now appears in the minute book of Elm Bank Hospital, viz: That in appreciation of the generous support given by Irlam and Cadishead up to their severance and joining up with Wibbersley Hospital, Flixton, the card "Irlam and Cadishead Bed‟ over the beds until lately supported by them, shall in position.‟
