Garry/Jim,
The age would be useful to know, also, I've sent an enquiry to the KORLR curator, as suggested.

Extract from KORLR reply - nominally unable to add to what is known, but helpfully noted:
"... Private Robert Barnes went overseas to Gallipoli (not Mesopotamia) on 13th June 1915, with the rest of the 6th Battalion. He is recorded as 'dead' rather than "died of wounds" which suggests to me that he died of disease probably contracted in Gallipoli. He would have been evacuated to Egypt where he later died. The 6th Battalion had no presence in Mesopotamia until 1916."

That makes sense as Alexandia had a large military hospital, and many who died at the hospital are interred in the Chatby cemetery there.

Dave,
Spent another two and half hours at the library tonight and rechecked both papers for 4 months after date of death without luck. I think this is going to be one of those were we come across some information when we are not looking for it (I hope you know what I mean).

Dave, Spent another two and half hours at the library tonight ... Garry, Much appreciated - I'll post again if I subsequently encounter anything that looks like useful progress. Dave.

Update: I have recently obtained the will for the Robert Barnes in my original enquiry, and it is *not* the person for whom I was searching.
However, I have traced the family of Pte. Robert Barnes (11949), at the same address in 1911 as shown in the will:
1915 Will - Robert Barnes 11949, Royal Lancaster Regiment, 21 Macclesfield Street, Chester Road, Manchester 1911 Census - Robert Barnes Age 15 - 21 Macclesfield Street, Chester Road, Hulme, Manchester
Parents: Robert Barnes (44) & Ruth Barnes (38).
Regards,
Dave.

Dave,
Thanks for getting back to us on this. The information may be of use to someone out there.
So, Pte Robert Barnes (11949, Royal Lancaster Regiment, would have been 19/20 years old at death.
Do you have a clue of which Robert Barnes you are looking for??
Garry
