The following article was published June 1918. Does anyone know who the Salford teacher (not Salford born) who won the VC was? Attachments:

Not referring to William Mariner is it?? He was born in Preston. Was he a schoolteacher?
The only other I know of, who was Salford-born, was Joseph Lister, (Sergeant 1st. Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers. Born 19/10/1886 at 65 Fenney Street, Higher Broughton. Died aged 76 on 19/01/1963. VC No. 747, Gazette 26/11/1917. Deed: "When the advence of his company was held up by machine-gun fire from the direction of a pill-box, he rushed ahead of his men, located the gun, killed two of the gunners and the remainder surrendered. Reaching the pill-box, he called on the garrison to surrender, which they did with the exception of one man whom he shot, whereupon almost 100 Germans surrendered as they emerged from nearby shell-holes."

Oops, I forgot Joseph Edward Woodall, Captain 1st. Bn. The Rifle Bridage. Born 01/06/1896, Robinson St., Salford. Died aged 65 on 02/01/1962 in Dublin. VC No. 1326, Gazetted 28/06/1918, whilst he was still a Lance Sergeant. I'm sure we had a thread about his deeds which earned his on here.
Of course, this is after the date of the article.

Jim, It wasn't Mariner, he was a bit of a character. Link

Interesting fella that Mariner. Don't know of any others, and not come across any. I always understood that Salford had two true 'Salford VC's' - being the two listed above who were men born and bred in Salford. Would be very interested to find out the third, especially if he was a schoolteacher. Think of the young lives he would have helped to shape.

I believe the VC teacher was William Thomas Forshaw of the Manchester Regiment. William was assistant master at North Manchester Grammar School, Leicester Rd, Broughton. Attachments:
