Tony Flynn has put a very interesting story on Salfordonline, about a man in Swinton who got the V.C.

Hi Elaine, I know one of the ladies connected with Friends of Salford Cemeteries has been researching Harry Croydon. The following information is taken from Symbol of Courage by Max Arthur: Crandon, Harry George, Private, 18th Hussars (Queen Mary's Own) 4th July 1901 - At Springbok Laagte, he dismounted and gave his horse to the wounded Private Berry, whose mount had fallen. He ran, leading his comrade's horse for over a thousand yards under fire, until shelter was reached. Born 12th Feb' 1874 in Wells, Somerset. Died 2nd Jan' 1953 in Swinton.
