although a lot of servicemens records were destroyed in the blitz in WW2,the germans were not responsible for the destruction of tens of thousands of records of soldiers who died in WW1,service records were only kept in case a soldier wanted to apply for a disability pension,if he died during the war,there would be no reason to keep his records. in between the wars,the army had began weeding out and destroying these records because they were no longer needed.
soldiers pension records were not kept at the same army warehouse as the service records,so any soldier who applied for a disability pension,is likely to have a surviving record,even if his application was rejected
