I have pretty much run dry on researching my great uncle George Leonard Ingham (3rd Salford). He was my maternal grandmother's brother.
But today I was sorting old family pictures and found info that indicates another great uncle by marriage was killed on the Somme. This time my maternal grandfather's sister's husband.
Pvt Alan W Heywood served in the 20th Bn and was killed Aug. 21, 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
I think his service number and the fact that he married in early 1916 would make him a replacement rather than an original Pal.
If anyone else has more detail I would appreciate it.
Thanks and Regards

Colin, I am presuming that you have the following: Name: Alan William Heywood Birth Place: Castle Acre, Norfolk Death Date: 21 Aug 1916 Death Place: France and Flanders Enlistment Place: Haslingden, Lancs Rank: Private Regiment: Lancashire Fusiliers Battalion: 20th Battalion Regimental Number: 31575 Type of Casualty: Killed in action Husband of Sarah May Heywood of 64 Rumbold Street, Duphill, Rochdale. No previous regiment shown on Medal Index Card, and no 1914/15 star so lande in France after 31st Jan 1915. Name shown as Allan on Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects. Can I suggest that you contact Rochdale Library and ask if they could see if there was any mention of Alan's death in the local papers? Best wishes, Garry

Thanks Garry. Yes I have that info although not the register. The library isn't practical what with me being overseas. I tried that with George and got nowhere. I will get the war diary. And we are due to do another month of ancestry so I shall see what that turns up.
Cheers
Colin
