Hi all, looking for information on one of your local boys. William Wrennall was born in Broughton, Salford in 1877 to George and Jane Wrennall. 1881 census has him age 4 at 7 Barlow St, Broughton, Salford, Lancs, subsequant 1911 census has him age 34 married to Maria at Tyson St, Crumpsall, Manchester. so age ties in. He is known as William Henry on various searches I have done. The thing is he ( I Believe) was killed (died on way to hospital) on 11th August 1918 . he was serving as M/332832 and SS/19939 in the ASC and 307315 in Labour Corps.
The reason for the request for help is that CWGC has him recorded as W.A Wrennall. I am draughting up proof in a hope that the records can be put straight. I am unaware of anywhere in the Salford area that bears his name on a memorial or church records and am asking for help. this may be a long shot as CWGC grave records and entries have him as W.A , which I think is either a transcription error A being mistaken for H or his dog tags had damage.
is it possible I could get help with proof or knowledge locally from forum members. thanks

From Registers of Soldiers Effects: Name: William Henry Wrumall Gender: Male Death Date: 11 Aug 1918 Rank: Private Regiment: Army Service Corps Regimental Number: M/332832 Looks like William Henry Wrennall to me and it also shows his wife as "Maria".

thanks for the confirmation, all backs up what I have. the job now is to convince CWGC to change his headstone and records. as he was from Salford and Broughton I would have thought he would have been remembered on a local war memorial. maybe the local British Legion could be involved. that's another quest.

I think that you now have enough evidence to ask CWGC to look at changing his entry. After all the Registers of Soldiers Effects is an official piece of documentation used by the army at the time. It shows his name, date of death and his army number.

Just getting paperwork finalised, having a good chance. only thing CWGC requires now is his full birth certificate. could you point me as to which would be records office holding his birth cert? thanks
there is a Salford address, and a southport one . one link has me registering with passport office?? not sure if Broughton comes under Salford?

just had a reply from Terry Denham in from the cold project on behalf of CWGC. don't need birth cert or census details as they may only tie up people with the same name not individual cases. apparently there are a lot of transcription errors. this one will be put forward in the next batch and should appear corrected in a months time.
thanks for your help.
