Hi.
At the Salford Diocesan Archives we are trying to put together a database of the Catholic Men of Manchester & Salford who fell in the Great War. Not easy as many of the Rolls of Honour were disposed of in the 1960s.
Quite a few of the churches want to recreate these Rolls for the centenary, if we can get the names together for them. We know how many men fell from each of the parishes and we have all the baptism, Confirmation and marriage registers scanned to cross reference with, plus a number of the school admission registers, so if anybody can help by suggesting Salford soldiers who would have been Catholic, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
I have been sending any information on the Catholic men to a gentleman by the name of Lawrence. I presume that you know who he is? If not, I can point you towards all the information that is available to date.
Garry

Hi Garry,
I am Lawrence. I just thought it might be quite good to make a presence on the forums here, thanks for all your help so far.
Thanks Pete for the Irlam names, they are very helpful, apparently 14 parishioners of St Teresa's died in the war.

Hi Lawrence, I have a full list and details of all the men from Irlam and Cadishead who died as a result of the war (including a number who are not included on the war memorial). Do you hold any further parish information that could be compared to my list of casualties? I'm curious as to who the other men may be.
One man I didn't list above who is a possibility is Private Clement Cain (Service no. 29532), 14th (Service) Battalion, The Highland Light Infantry, who died of wounds on 27th June 1918. The only evidence I have is that his brother Ernest married at St Teresa’s. Of course it might be that he wasn't Catholic but was marrying a Catholic woman.
Regards Pete

Hi my great grandfather was Roman Catholic Joseph Doyle although he actually survived the war I would appreciate some information about his service. I have looked on Ancestry records and found nothing, I have recently just received a photo of him in uniform but can not make out his badge or patch looks like he may be wearing a armband on his left arm too. I have posted this photo on my post and was advised to contact this post.. I believe his parish was St James Church on chrurch street now demolished. Any help would be very appreciated. . thanks Stan
