Attested 19th Sept 1914 aged 46 (looks like he shaved a few years off his age). Address shown as 57 Harrison St, Walkden. Prior to the war James had worked as a collier. To France on the 4th January 1915, killed in action on the 28th January 1915. Brother William Baines, 10 Conway St, Farnworth.

Arrived in France on the 14th July 1915. Entitled to 1915 Star, the Victory and British War medals. Probably the Lawrence Kennedy shown on the 1911 census as born in 1896, living with his parents, Thomas and Eliza, at 74 Worsley Rd, Little Hulton. A 15 year old labourer (coal mine).

Birth Place: Walton, Liverpool Residence: Great Lever, Bolton, Lancs Death Location: France & Flanders Enlistment Location: Manchester Type of Casualty: Killed in action My grandfather's cousin, Henry/Harry Mclinden, was born in Walton, Liverpool in 1892, one of about 13 children. His parents, Patrick, a railway worker, and Agnes, moved their family to Bolton in the early 1900s. Henry joined the 17th Battalion Manchester Regiment, Reg. no. 8738. He took part in the Battle of the Somme and was killed in action near Arras on 23rd April 1917. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial. According to an article in the Bolton Evening News, first published 9th Nov 2002, he was killed by a bullet through the heart, which skimmed the pages of a book by Pre-Raphaelite poet Christina Rossetti. The book was in his breast pocket and was later returned to his family in Bolton. Henry's name appears on the War memorial at Manchester's Victoria Railway Station.
