Very interesting reading. I have recently made a contact at the Greater Manchester Police Museum, so I will ask if they have any info on this memorial. I do know they have a lot of material on the former County Borough forces which were taken over when they became part of the Greater Manchester Police force following the 1974 reorganisations of Municipal Authorities.

We have received the following correspondence from the museum today: "Thank you for your email about the WW1 memorial. Unfortunately we have been unable to locate this memorial ourselves, despite making enquiries in recent years. We have approached the Salford Museum Service to see if they knew of its whereabouts, but they had no note of its location. Also, it does not appear to be listed on the UK National Inventory of War Memorials - www.ukniwm.org.uk The extract that you reproduced I believe is from the History of Policing in Salford by Platt - I am uncertain as to when his book was produced, but the location referred to may have been the former police station at the Crescent or an earlier police station. Sadly we have never been informed about the memorial, its location, or been offered it for the collection. Our enquiries are continuing, and I will keep your details on file and let you know if we locate the memorial." |
