This from a friend of mine today--------expertise please.
''I'd like you advice. I've got my Grandfather's Great War medals and also his discharge book, reference from his CO and some photos of him taken during the actual war. We've got no kids and I would hate to think of them being chucked out or something when we're gone - do you think someone like the Imperial War Museum would take them, or do you think they already have so much of that stuff they wouldn't want any more.''
What shall i tell her??

Hi Broomy, I wouldn't recommend the IWM. They already have massive collections which rarely if ever get displayed. Once the medals and documents are donated, the museums will not give them back to the family. It would be better to look at a regimental museum or archive or a local history museum (depends where her grandfather came from). For instance, if he was in the Manchesters, the museum and archives in Ashton-under-Lyne would be an excellent starting place. Another example is the Royal Welsh Fusiliers museum in Carnaevon Castle which has a room dedicated to medals which have been donated by families.
If they go to a museum, you should try to get assurances that they will be displayed and at least catalogued. For instance, documents such as the letters and pay book should be registered with the National Archives.
Hope this helps Pete

Broomy,
I presume your friend has no cousins whose children would like these precious objects? I would cherish any of my Great Uncles medals or papers. Failing that I think Pete's recommendations are spot on.

Sorry Broomy,no idea. I think I'm losing it! The contact details are on the following website: www.theguardsmuseum.com/Family-ResearchDid he come from Salford? Perhaps an approach to the Local History Museum might be best. The Guards museum is almost certainly too big to display them. Also your friend needs to consider whether she wants them displayed in London. I agree with Garry, that the very best place is a trusted relative. Cheers Pete
