Variant: Maritzburg (common abbreviation used in HMG I). The city was the civil and military control point for British operations in Natal and a focus for reinforcements and supplies. During Cmdt-Gen P.J. Joubert's raid into southern Natal, his patrols reached as far south as Nottingham Road* on 22 November 1899 just over 40 km from the capital. As a result, the Natal Pioneer Corps hastily prepared defensive positions around the city. It was the location of a white concentration refugee camp.
