I'm appalled. I'd volunteer to help with a cleanup / clearance personally, just out of respect for those interred and remembered there. I too would be happy to help with this one (I've actually offered my help to another one recently which could do with some work though it's nothing on this scale! This would need several people and a skip, it is not a copule of hours kind of job if you see what I mean...each section brings different problems and aspects of neglect. Attachments:

Maybe we could see if the Probation Service would come on board. This is exactly the sort of thing that the Community Payback scheme was made for.

St Augustine's could do with a little help clearing up too, it's nothing major like this but it is heartbreaking to see. I will add some photos on that thread although it was difficult to photograph what I was trying to show at St Augustine's as it's piles of brick/coal/rubble, broken glass, and quad bike tyre and skid marks on the graves (!)
You really need to go to these places to see it for yourself as it is quite unbelieveable that these places of rest and respect can be allowed to fall into such a mess

E L Radcliffe is Ernest Lambert Radcliffe, he married Christina Withers in 1912. It looks like he was born about 1890 in Preston, 1911 census living in Patricroft. Found one likely death entry for him in Sunderland. He is the brother in law of John/Jack Withers L/F's 16th btn whose name is on the Lych Gate at St Peters church. Another brother in law Frederick Greers also died L/F's 10th btn. Greers was married to Beatrice Withers. 3rd brother in law Samuel Youngman L/F's 16th btn married to Ethel Withers, survived the war but badly injured in july 1916, according to family it was gun shot wound to the face, injuries were definately to face and arm.

A bit of good news. I visited the graveyard today. The CWG has been recently. The headstones look very good. I did a basic tidy up around the war graves. The rest of the graveyard is still untouched thou.

Bad news. The site has knotweed. Anyone who knows the full rules and regs surrounding knotweed and the soil will tell you this is the kiss of death regards clearance
