Hi , just looking at the names on the memorial.. The names Charles and Thomas RAWSEY I am convinced are my relatives and the name should be PAWSEY. If you take a closer look the names are out of alphabetical order if RAWSEY is used PAWSEY would fit in. My grandfather Charles Pawsey was from the Greengate area and was wounded at the Somme. Please could you have another look at this? I have lived a lifetime struggling with people getting the name right. Thank you in anticipation Julia Conway Nee Pawsey.

Hi , yes I would say so. If you look at the list which I have since done more carefully. Rawsey is out of alphabetical order Pawsey is right. Charles Pawsey is my grandfather . The address 125 Greengate is actually The Star public house. Thomas was my grandads uncle.

Hi Wendy , just a quickie. I sent an e mail to Neal Keeling at the Manchester evening news and he luckily hasn't sent the names to the engraver yet so will be able to sort it out for me. He is sending them for Monday. Just while I'm on I noticed there was a mistake on here about a chap called Joseph Southward. Did the correct name get sent to Neal. I just can't leave it without asking. It is just so important.
Thank you for your help today regards Julia

Julia, We believe that Neal is aware of Joseph Southward. You could email him to ask for confirmation.

Hi , Neal Keeling has been in touch about my relatives . He wants to do some articles about some of the people named on the memorial. He ha asked about their service history. I have no idea how to find this out. Can anyone help me ? He has asked for a photograph and I can help him with a photo of Charles. I have some info on Charles Pawsey. I know he was a L. Corpl in the 21st battalion of the Manchester regiment. Roll number 18967. I have no info on Thomas Pawsey , his uncle. Thank you in anticipation Julia

Julia, I will see what I can find. In the meantime you may wish to ask for some help with regards to Charles on the Manchester Regiment Forum. linkI can tell you that Charles made the rank of Sergeant, landed in France on the 10th November 1915 - awarded the 1915 Star, British and Victory medals. Thomas served with the RAF - I am presuming this is Thomas Jr (shown in the 1911 census) but cannot be sure. Do you know if the following man, remembered at the Chapel Street and Hope United Reformed Church, is a family member? Thomas Pawsey Flying Officer 163583 Royal Air Force died 25/2/45 CWG Panel 267 Runnymede Memorial Age 23 son of Thomas and Mary Jane Pawsey ,husband of Louisa Pawsey of Prestwich Lancashire

Hi , that is wonderful thanks for your help. The above photo is the one I have. My brother came across a book with all these regiments in. Charles is on the second row up from the bottom fourth man from the right( as we are looking at it ). Now you have me thinking about the Thomass. The pictured Charles (born in 1891) had a brother Thomas ( born 1898) and his son Thomas born in 1921/22 ? (very confusing all this) is the one you are speaking of. Thomas Pawsey RAF 462 squadron died 25/2/45. So that means the second Thomas is Charless nephew.
The Thomas on the Greengate memorial I presumed originally was Charless uncle but Charles had a brother Thomas ( I'd forgotten about him) and I don't know anything about him so maybe it is him on the memorial.
My dad was also called Charles (!!) This man pictured in his father. He was shot at the battle of the Somme. My brother has the bullet he was shot with and also a trench map (with a bullet hole through it ) which he carried also his dog tags. Not sure if he has any medals. This Charles I am told when shot lay wounded and lost a lot of blood. On recouperation he caught TB. My dad says he only ever remembered his dad as an invalid. He would sit front door of their home in a chair getting fresh air. He died in 1934 aged 42 , my dad was 11.
Charless uncle Thomas would have been 44 when WW1 broke out so would he have been too old to serve ? I don't know.
I have done some family tree work. My dad as I say was only 11 when his dad died so he didn't know much about his fathers side of the family because as he said after his death his mother sort of stuck to her side of the family. Luckily Pawsey is not a common name and all the Pawseys in Salford would be related.
Thank you for your help it is much appreciated Julia

Hi Julia, I think Thomas Pawsey (WW1 RAF) is the Thomas born in 1897/8. This Thomas (the son of Thomas and Maria) married Mary Jane Charnley in 1921. They had two sons: Name: Thomas Pawsey Mother's Maiden Surname: Charnley Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1921 Registration district: Salford Inferred County: Lancashire Volume Number: Page Number: 111 Name: Richard Pawsey Mother's Maiden Surname: Charnley Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1929 Registration district: Salford Inferred County: Lancashire Volume Number: Page Number: 559 Thomas Pawsey, born 1921, would be: Thomas Pawsey Flying Officer 163583 Royal Air Force died 25/2/45 CWG Panel 267 Runnymede Memorial Age 23 son of Thomas and Mary Jane Pawsey ,husband of Louisa Pawsey of Prestwich Lancashire

Hi , this is brilliant. I have realised I am a generation out ! Charles had a brother called Thomas who died aged 4 so that's not the one. The Thomas you are talking about above is actually Charless cousin. Thomas here is the son of Thomas Pawsey who was the landlord of the Star pub on Deansgate. So mystery is solved. Thank you so much
