Men not found on data already posted J Arley G M Arnes G Gorman H Lea G Moore G Owen B Walworth M Hayes H Hanna D Hayes W J Hayes W Rodgers A Downey J E Hewitt Wendy Harold Hanna was a regular communicant at St. Clement’s. He lived at 162 Hulton Street and when he left school he worked for the Co-operative Wholesale Society, Sun Mills. After enlisting he was sent to the Curragh in Ireland for training, and was quickly made a Lance Corporal. On learning that his brother George would be home on leave from the Western Front he obtained leave of his own to go home to see him. However, he went down with the RMS Leinster on 18th October 1918 when it was torpedoed in the Irish Sea, a few days before the Armistice. The School he attended was Salford Municipal Secondary School for Boys, which in 1932 was renamed Salford Grammar School. His name is on the Old Salfordians’ Memorial Plaque which since 2010 has hung in the Peel Building of the University of Salford. From 1921 to 1955 it hung in the Hall at the School’s Leaf Square premises, and for 19 years his brother Walter saw it every day. Walter joined the staff in 1921, teaching maths and physics, but died suddenly in 1940 the day before his 50th birthday. A fuller account of Harold’s life will be appearing shortly in The Old Salfordian, the twice yearly newsletter of the Old Salfordians’ Association.

If they are correct, this is my mother's uncle, but she had no idea an uncle had been killed in the War. Nor did her brother, and cousins of theirs were also unaware. It's news to the family historians in the third generation, and obviously I'm keen to explore it more closely. Old Salfordian

Ben, thanks for the additional info. The extract from the National Roll of Honour shows how inaccurate it can often be. The entries were completed by family members after the war. Charles wasn't killed during the first landings at Gallipoli in April 1915 (first landings 25th April). He went out from Devonport on 14th July disembarked at Imbros on 23rd July and was killed during the landings at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, on 7th August 1915.
Regards Pete
