My great grandmother Margaret Alice (maiden name Buckle) was born in 1880 in Yorkshire. In the early 1900's she moved to Lancashire. This is the only photograph I have of her.
Margaret's life was a hard struggle, indeed in 1905 she was in the Fishpool workhouse. When I started my family history I had no idea that I would uncover such a complicated and sad story. Margaret must have been a very strong and determined woman with a lot of courage.
In 1899 she married George Marshall and had her first son Robert in Leeds in 1900. George sadly died and Margaret went on to marry Allen Nuttall at Farnworth in 1905 but within 3 months the marriage had broken down as Allen and his daughter had been mistreating Margaret. Allen Nuttall ended up in jail and Margaret ended up in the workhouse where she gave birth to Daniel Nuttall.
In 1907 Margaret met my great grandad Thomas Samuel Harrison (known as Sam) but as she was legally married to Mr Nuttall they were unable to marry. Margaret and Sam lived together as man and wife and had two children, my grandad John (Jack) in 1910 and Alice in 1915. The family lived on Whit Lane and Caldwell Street.
In December 1940 Margaret was a patient at Salford Royal Hospital and during the blitz the beds were moved into the middle of the ward. Despite best efforts Margaret wasn't moved in time and she was very badly injured and she was transferred to Whittingham Emergency War Hospital near Preston where in Februaury 1941 she sadly died. Whilst in hospital Margaret had a small box of belongings with her, family photos and possibly a small brooch but these were lost during the bombings and have never been seen since, oh how I wish I had those photographs!
It took me a long time to piece together Margaret's story and I have uncovered some family secrets during the search but I eventually found her unmarked grave at Heaton Cemetery, Bolton. I'm saving to buy a headstone for her.
