Hello Am puzzled about a memorial that I found here, which seems to have my Granddad's name on it, but I can't be sure. There's a J goodier on the Stowell Memorial Sunday School Roll Of Honour and Granddad's name was "John". He had close links to this church in his youth, but all the men who are listed have been described as killed in action, whereas he survived. It's possible that this J Goodier is a different person, although it seems unlikely. Is there any way of finding out for sure, or am I wrong in thinking that someone who survived the war would ever be included in the first place. Granddad was born in Ordsall and lived at 29 Brooklands Street in 1911. By the end of the war he was living at New Cross Street in Weaste.

Hello ecclessmith, Link to the Stowell Memorial threadThe Stowell Memorial Sunday School Roll of Honour is exactly how it is described. A roll of Honour did not necessarily contain the names of only those that gave their lives it was usually a list of names of all the people from an area, community, workplace, etc. who had served. The men who gave their lives from the Church would have been listed on the actual memorial which has been lost. I will do some searches and see if I can find any extra information on John.

Thank you for the information about the Roll of Honour. It seems like it might be my Granddad after all. He served with the 16th and 17th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers and was in the Salford Pals, was wounded in 1917, though not seriously and went on to join the Home Guard during the second world war, if that's any help.

John's entry in the Salford Absent Voters. John's medal Index card. Let me know if you have any questions with regards to the Medal Index card. As he served as a Lieutenant his service record should be available if you know anyone who can visit Kew.

Thanks for the info. I've never seen the Absent Voter's list before and I noticed my Granddad's cousin, Thomas Ivor Lawson, is on the list too. As for the service records, I think I have most of them already. The regimental museum at Bury very kindly sent me all they have, but I think a lot of records were lost in the second world war. Somehow, finding Granddad's name on the Roll of Honour, meant more to me than anything else though, and I would never have known about it had I not come across this website. So a very Big Thank You to you and all your fellow "Swarmees", for making it possible. This site is a great source of information for our community and for posterity.
